フレデリックトンプソン教授とトンプソン夫人の息子であるダグラストンプソンは、1983年にクイーンズ大学を卒業し、B.Musを取得しました。彼は、キングストンで長年活躍しました。 1982年にはKiwanis Music Festival(キワニス・ミュージック・フェスティバル)で Donna Gobin Memorial Rosebowl賞を獲得し、1984年には Kiwanis Senior Scholarship(上級奨学金)を獲得しました。その同じ年、彼はトロントの若手アーティストコンペティションO.R.M.T.A.にて、大会2位の成績を修め、A.R.C.T.というファーストクラスの栄誉を授かりました。キングストンでは Hugheen Ferguson と Ireneus Zukのもとで学びました。現在彼は、イギリスのロンドン王立音楽大学の上級生向けディプロマコースで勉強しており、アランローランズ氏に師事していました。

Douglas Thompson, son of Professor and Mrs. Frederick Thompson, graduated from Queen’s with a B.Mus in 1983. He has performed actively in Kingston for many years and participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival. In 1982, he won the Donna Gobin Memorial Rosebowl at the Festival and in 1984 he won the Kiwanis Senior Scholarship. That same year, he was runner-up in the O.R.M.T.A. Young Artists Competition in Toronto and obtained his A.R.C.T. with First Class Honors. In Kingston, he was a student of Hugheen Ferguson and Ireneus Zuk. He studied in England at the Royal College of Music, London, in the Diploma Course for Advanced Students, where his teacher was Alan Rowlands.1984-1986

When I came of age for University, I studied piano at Queen’s University under Ireneus Zuk. He taught me piano during my 4 years at Queen’s.

カナダのトロントにある王立音楽院は、私が子供時代に勉強した世界レベルの音楽教育機関です。私のピアノの先生であるヒューイーン・ファーガソン自身も若い頃はRCMで学び、クラスメートの1人にはピアニストのGlenn Gouldがいました。私は王立音楽院試験に合格するため、ファーガソン先生からたくさんのことを学びました。

The Royal Conservatory of Music is a world-class music education institution in Toronto, Canada. My piano teacher Hugheen Ferguson studied at the RCM as a youth. In fact, one of her classmates was the pianist, Glenn Gould. With Mrs Ferguson, I prepared for each exam. When I was ready to take the exam, I played for an RCM examiner, usually in my own hometown.

クイーンズ大学を卒業後は、ロンドンのロイヤルカレッジオブミュージックで勉強するという夢が叶いました。僕は有名なウェールズのピアニスト、アラン・ローランドに師事しました。音楽、演劇、食事、歴史、美しい公園と庭園に囲まれ、充実した8年間を過ごし、このままずっとロンドンに住みたいと思いました。

After graduation from Queen’s, I attained my dream to study in London England at the Royal College of Music. I studied with the well-known Welsh pianist Alan Rowlands.

もっと世界を旅したいと考えた私は、海外で英語を教えることにしました。そこでケンブリッジ大学の英語教育コースで資格を修得した後、エジプトを旅しながら日本へ向かい、東京と埼玉の学校で勤務しながら日本語を学びました。

I had an urge to travel more. I learned about teaching English overseas. The best opportunities came to those with the University of Cambridge Certificate for Teaching English. After completion, I joined an English Language school in Japan. I taught in Tokyo and Saitama prefecture for 3 years.

London Montessori – Teacher Training Diploma

ロイヤルカレッジオブミュージックの学生として過ごす間に、モンテッソーリの幼稚園で音楽を教え始めた経験が、私がモンテッソーリ教育法に興味を持ったきっかけとなりました。通信教育でモンテッソーリ教育資格を取得すると同時に、ピアノ教師として、ケントのクランブルックにあるベネデンスクールフォーガールズでもピアノを教えていました。

As a student at the RCM I became more interested in teaching. I began to teach music at a Montessori kindergarten. This got me interested in the Montessori method. I took training by distance learning while teaching at the school. I also taught piano at Benenden School for Girls in Cranbrook, Kent.

私はイギリスのサリー大学の大学院で、言語学の研究を続けました。日本語学習者のグループと言語習得に関する研究成果の論文を書きました。私の焦点は性別による言語学習の違いにありました。そして新しい学位を取得し、中東のアブダビにある石油研究所で工学を学んでいる学生たちに英語を教えていました。

I decided to continue my academic work by distance learning with the University of Surrey. I conducted research on language acquisition with a group of Japanese language learners. My focus was on the differences of language learning based on gender. With my new degree, I soon found myself in the Middle East teaching English at the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi. I taught both young men and women who were studying Engineering.

カタールにあるノースアトランティックカレッジ、カナダ校に勤務しながら、私は最後の学位を得ました。エクセター大学では対照的教育理論を研究しました。特にミシェルフーコーの「権力と知識の関係」に関する理論、およびハンナアレントの知識理論に基づいて言語の研究を行いました。

My final degree was completed while working in Qatar at the College of the North Atlantic, Qatar. My interests at the University of Exeter were based on contrasting theories of education, in particular those of Michel Foucault and his theories of the relationship between power and knowledge as well as Hannah Arendt`s theory of knowledge.
